ARNOTT’S GLUTEN FREE PRODUCTION IN MARLESTON

RETROSPECTIVE SERIES:

ARNOTT’S GLUTEN-FREE JOURNEY AT MARLESTON

Consumer preferences in food manufacturing evolve rapidly, and gluten-free has become one of the fastest-growing demands. Arnott’s, an iconic Australian brand, responded in 2022 by adapting part of its Marleston facility in South Australia to meet this need. Hydra Consulting was proud to partner with Arnott’s on this journey, helping transform strategy into execution.

The Challenge

Producing gluten-free versions of iconic products like BBQ Shapes, Jatz, and Savoy is challenging. Consumers expect these products to match the original taste, texture, and quality exactly. Arnott’s clearly defined these expectations, ensuring the new gluten-free products complied with the Gluten-Free Standard established by Coeliac Australia and New Zealand, without compromising brand integrity.

The Solution : No Compromising

Hydra Consulting’s role concentrated specifically on the delivery of the 2nd Process and Packaging areas, requiring precise management of contamination risks to meet the stringent gluten-free standards.

  • Dedicated Cleanroom Design: We designed and implemented the 2nd Process Seasoning Room, strictly adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) specifically tailored for gluten-free production with the application of multiple seasoning additives.

  • Specialised Equipment and Factory Testing: Rigorous Factory Acceptance Testing ensured all equipment met Arnott’s exact requirements before installation.

  • Advanced Air Quality Management: Custom dust, oil and allergen extraction technologies, safeguarded product integrity and compliance.

  • Streamlined Waste and Utility Management: Clear waste stream separation and upgraded utility systems (compressed air, steam, water) supported efficient and compliant packaging operations.

Hydra’s approach ensured meticulous coordination of procurement, safety compliance, commissioning, and testing phases. As a result, Arnott’s 2nd Process zone, Seasoning Room and Packaging processes were successfully adapted to reliably produce gluten-free products within time and budget constraints.

The Impact

The successful adaptation of Arnott’s 2nd Process and Packaging upgrades sets a new benchmark for gluten-free product manufacturing. Consumers now confidently enjoy gluten-free BBQ Shapes, Jatz, and Savoy biscuits without compromise. For Hydra Consulting, this project reinforced the value of precise project management, proactive regulatory planning, and specialised process integration.
